Hi!
I'm new to Bic Runga's music. A Aussie friend told me about her. I've seen some vidieos on you tube and I really like her. I'm intrested in asian singers. I worship Ayumi Hamasaki. I'm in the US, California to be exact. I'm male. You want to know anything else, just ask. Nice to be here!

3:44 pm - Icons!

labellementeuse
So a few days ago I stumbled across this page of Bic photos by photographer Ross Halfin. They were so gorgeous I had to make icons of some of them; and while I was at it I added a couple of ones I've made previously but had been saving for a bigger post. So, yeah, icons under the cut, along with two friends-only banners.

Feel free to customise any of the bases; just let me know so I get to see what you did with them. Crediting is nice, commenting is nicer. :)

The August/September acoustic tour of the UK, Ireland and Paris dates have just been announced over at bicrunga.com; also, don't forget she's supporting James Blunt through July.

Also! Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 August, she will be playing at Largo bar in Los Angeles- yes, folks, that's an American date!

Aaaaand there are numerous Australian dates from the 27th of July to the 12th or so of August, so anyone there (especially cities, probably) should also check those dates!

Man, Bic. Come home to us!

In non-concert related news: the Birds Special Edition CD & DVD is out! Details here, but briefly: the bonus tracks are Somewhere in the Night and Something's Gotta Hold Of My Heart and the DVD contains 5 songs from the Civic concert plus music videos for Winning Arrow and Say After Me. I'm a little disappointed we don't get a whole extra CD of music ;) (my favourite tracks are invariably B-sides and extras), but I'm excited for the DVD content... am going to check it out ASAP!

Kia ora everyone,

Just dropping by to let you know that I have taken over maintainership of bic_runga_love, since loveboat has regrettably moved on from LJ. My name's Tui, I'm a huge Bic fan, I live and go to university in Christchurch, New Zealand Aotearoa. Hi!

The community will continue to run as is; if anyone has any suggestions of improvements, or any other questions or concerns, they should feel free to contact me at labellementeuse(at)hotmail(dot)com or leave a comment anywhere here or in my personal journal. I will probably amend the profile somewhat sometime soon, so if anyone has any suggestions for that, too, let me know!

Hey gang,

I just uploaded a bunch of B-sides and raretracks for a friend, because they can be very hard to find legally, especially overseas. The post is here, you're all welcome to pop over if you want. Megaupload so they shouldn't expire, but if anyone has any problems please say so.

Hi guys,

I don't know if any of you here are in the UK, but I just found out Bic is planning a tour here in May/June time. She also has some dates in Ireland. I've got them listed here on my website (that tracks all kiwi bands touring the uk) and they're also available on her website. :)

I'm hoping to get to the Glasgow show, thankfully it's on a Friday so I should make it. *cross fingers* I missed her last time, so I'm desperate to see her this time around.

woot! I got see Bic in concert last night at the Hamer Hall, Arts Centre, Melb. The second time for me, I saw her at the Athenaeum Th around the release of Beautiful Collision.

I managed to miss the first two or three songs (... honestly, who starts at the starting time?! no band I know). I got there and I was like, "wow, they're actually playing her songs for ambience, that's a nice touch". But no, it was actually her. :)

The first half was older stuff as well as a cover of the famous French song 'Ne me quitte pas'. I have to say ... nice try, Bic, but no cigar. But it's a pretty hard song to better, I'd say. Also 'Sway', 'Bursting through' (ahh, beautiful), 'Get some sleep' and 'She left on a Monday', as well as the ones I can't remember. SLoaM is actually the weakest song on "Beautiful Collision" if you ask me, but maybe I'm alone in that opinion.

She also had her hair cut in a much shorter "Cleopatra" style bob, if you can imagine that.

The second half was pretty much all of "Birds" with the full studio band, which was pretty wow. The first time I get to see Neil Finn in concert, heh. :) She also thanked Neil for "letting me drop his name EVERYWHERE".

She made a couple of jokes... she commented how great The Church playing "Under the milky way" at the Comm Games opening ceremony had been. Then she said, "We were thinking of inviting some New Zealand athletes [to come to her concert], but we didn't want to bum them out with our loser vibe." LOL. She also made fun of her mum being an Il Divo fan (who had apparently played there the previous night): adopts NZ accent "They're handsome, and they can sing too!" (pretty strange to hear a NZer adopt a NZ accent)

The encore was 'The be-all & end-all' and 'Drive'. (Hm maybe I forgot a song in the middle... not sure.)

The venue had all these attendants who were super-anal about photography. Of course pretty much everyone ignored them and took photos anyway (although what good your flash does 20+m away in a darkened hall is a mystery to me). One of them was like True/Prue from "Kath & Kim" incarnate. (Does NZ get this show? If you've seen this characters, you'll know it was pretty freaky. I couldn't figure out if she was putting it on or not. I think so, but then that's almost *more* freaky.)

OK now my opinion of "Birds" itself...
* Winning arrow - actually kind of bland IMO. not as strong as 'Sway' or 'Get some sleep'.
* Say after me - eh. tracks like this make me think Bic took her role in "Little fish" as a lounge singer to heart. ;)
* Listen - ++
* Birds - Very cool. Fantastic instrumentation (esp. piano) and I agree with Bic's assessment that birds are really "strange". So, wow.
* Ruby nights - Great, I love this. The backing vox are perfect and I love how low her voice gets. It has a real 'western' feel to it.
* No crying no more - borderline saccharine...lucky Bic can carry it.
* If I had you - I'm so tempted to just write this off. I can see it being a big wedding tune. But now I think it's a bit Bacharach-style 50's big ballad, and I don't hate them, they have their place... I just don't think I'll be able to stomach this every time I listen to this CD. :)
* Captured - excellent...sequel to Ruby nights.
* That's alright - also ++.
* Blue blue heart - so awesome and fun. backing vox again make this great. maybe the only tune I could see triple j playing. I should really just give up hoping for airplay, right...
* It's over - again the lounge singer vibe. well when I go through my next break-up I'll dive straight for this one.

This sounds pretty negative, but I'm impressed with how she's pushing herself, I just think she should stick with it. For that reason Birds, Ruby nights, Captured and Blue blue heart are my standouts, just because they're something new for her.

OK, you can trash my opinion now! :)

9:55 pm - Any Singaporean Bic Runga fans around?

andretan
Hiya everyone :)

I'm a big Bic Runga fan from Singapore, and I first heard Sway over the radio at my part-time job about 5 years ago, but I didn't catch the title/artiste of the song. So I kept listening everyday, until I got the title and artiste name... and that's when I fell in love with Bic Runga's music.

Although there are lots of music stores around in Singapore, it's pretty difficult to find a Bic Runga album, not to mention limited stocks if you could find them.

I also have no idea when Birds would be out in Singapore. :-/

Any fans from Singapore here? :)

If you live in NZ, you can download both tracks of the Winning Arrow single here. Unfortunately this leaves me out but I was able to listen to the sample clip of the B side, "Somewhere in the Night" by clicking on the title next to #2.

Also, bicrunga.net has posted the entire album review from the Sunday Star Times.

Did everyone get the "VIP" email? The release date for Birds is 11/28 (but we knew that) but the single, Winning Arrow which includes the music video will be released 11/21, so that is why I haven't been able to order it yet.

track listingsCollapse )

Both fanclub shows have evidently sold out as well, but since I am in the U.S. I didn't stand much of a chance of getting there anyway :^) I hope that someone here gets the chance to attend and then reports back. This reminds me of a terrible disappointment I had last year; I was dwelling on the long space between albums, and how wonderful it would be to see my idol live in concert so I decided to do some research and see if she was touring. It turned out that she appeared live 3 days before I made the query just two towns away. I was devastated. From now on I will keep on top of these things!

Still no word on a north American release, but I pre-ordered Birds from here - with the Air Mail option it came to 38.02 which is about $26.60 for us in the US. Not too bad! I assume I will get it about a week after 11/28?

Also, I found this poster linked on the bicrunga.com message board, and I love it! I am going to print it on a sheet of watercolor inkjet paper and frame it (or at least put it on my fridge) :^) Every so often a poster comes up on eBay and I have gotten a couple of import singles that way too.

Winning Arrow - Bic Runga

There is a Love
There is a Life we share
Hand in glove
It wont seperate us

C'mon once again
Cast off your sorrow
C'mon life will end
Dance on the morning dew

Casting a line to you
Safe from sling and arrow
Think of the love we knew
How it goes on....

Fine days of love
There is a scent in the air
Above and beyond
The One who made us

C'mon once again
Cast off your sorrow
C'mon life will end
Won't get the best of you

Casting a line to you
Love is the winning arrow
Fire it straight and true to
Whatever you love

(Instrumental)

Casting a line to you
Love is the winning arrow
Fire it straight and true to
Whatever you love

Hello... I just discovered this community. And what good news to discover there's a new album on the way! :D

I saw Bic in Melbourne, by myself, not long after the release of "Beautiful Collision". She is sublime. I took that disc to China with me when I went there on exchange for six months, and converted my roommate (a fellow Aussie) and a French girl to her music. :D

I have a bit of a query. Is there any reason Bic doesn't have a song on the recent Tim & Neil Finn tribute album, "She will have her way" (covers by Aus & NZ female musicians)? Stellar* even have one - "Persuasion" (Tim Finn). Her exclusion seems REALLY odd to me, especially when people like Amiel and Natalie Imbruglia are included. (I mean, why not Kylie?) It's not as if she's not a fan of them - she was recently touring with them, wasn't she?

Basically, I'm just bitching 'cause hearing the combination of Bic Runga and Finn-ness would possibly be the musicial highlight of my life.

Has anyone ever heard her cover a Tim/Neil/Crowdies/Split Enz song?

cheers!
